An In-depth Examination of the Seek, Test, Treat and Retain (STTR) Framework in Four Criminal Justice Population Research Studies

In 2010, the National Institute of Drug Abuse implemented an initiative targeting the “Seek, Test, Treat, and Retain” (STTR) paradigm with HIV-infected drug abusers in criminal justice populations. The aim of the initiative is to develop, implement, and test strategies to increase HIV testing, provide antiretroviral therapy (ART) to HIV seropositive individuals, and to increase engagement and retention of individuals in HIV treatment during and after community re-entry following incarceration. This initiative is unique in that it is harmonizing data across 12 independent criminal-justice based research studies. Four of the 12 research studies will be presenting results from their initial findings. Topics that will be explored include: risky sexual and substance abuse behaviors, uptake of HIV testing and ART, adherence to ART, viral load suppression,
