PS11: Reentry: "Channeling Freire to Teach Inmates the Social Determinants of Health"

Having been educated with didactic lectures and power point presentations, many of us continue using this pedagogy in our work with inmates. However, literacy limitations, and differences in learning styles often make it difficult achieve the desired learning objectives. This presentation will contrast a traditional approach to teaching about the social determinants of health with that of Brazilian educator Paolo Freire, where learning goals include taking action to achieve social change. We will discuss challenges and successes in implementing such a program and provide resources for curriculum adaptation.
